Strangeways: The Only Way Out Is Through is an intimate, audience-driven journey through the subconscious of Echo, a neurodivergent artist who has retreated into the surreal virtual world of Strangeways. Unable to reach Echo alone, their closest friend, Zephyr, recruits the audience to venture into this symbolic landscape, where every environment represents a memory, defense mechanism, fear, or coping strategy—in the hope that a fresh perspective can succeed where familiar reassurance cannot.
As Echo guides the audience through the world they created, each conversation reshapes how they understand the spaces around them. Rather than offering solutions, the audience bears witness, asks questions, and offers interpretations that allow Echo to see beauty where they once saw shame, resilience where they saw weakness, and possibility where they saw only limitation. By the end of the journey, the audience has not changed Echo - they have helped Echo change the way they see themselves.
At its heart, Strangeways is about the transformative power of empathy. It explores what it means to truly see another person without trying to fix them, challenging societal perceptions of neurodivergence while celebrating it as a source of creativity, insight, and strength. Ultimately, the experience asks whether healing comes not from escaping our inner worlds, but from learning to walk through them together.
Tanvi Agrawal (they/them) is an immersive storyteller with a background in both theatre and XR. They spent ten years acting before transitioning into directing, studying the craft throughout high school and college while directing scenes, one-acts, and full-length productions including 1984, Universal Language, and Waiting for Godot. Most recently, they have directed new works monthly for the national playwriting incubator PlayGround.
Tanvi’s immersive work began with creating 360° films and serving as Creative Director for an augmented reality animation project at UC Berkeley, where they also wrote an undergraduate thesis exploring the impact of augmented reality on the human experience. Since then, they have produced immersive theatre with Ferryman Collective, developed immersive entertainment experiences through UCLA REMAP (Research Center for Engineering, Media and Performance), and created independent immersive projects featured at MIT Reality Hack.
Tanvi recently completed an MBA at UCLA Anderson School of Management, where they founded RealityCheck, a discovery platform that helps audiences discover immersive entertainment while creating greater visibility and new monetization opportunities for immersive creators. They also run @tanvixreality on social media, bringing awareness to XR technologies and the growing Immersive Entertainment industry.
